How to Get Your Business Up and Running After a Natural Disaster

As we’ve seen this past weekend, disasters can happen at a drop of a hat. Whether it’s an earthquake, a hurricane or a flood, your business can be affected by things we can’t control. Having a disaster plan in place can help protect your business, employees and other assets. Making sure that everyone knows the disaster plan is also crucial. But what do you do after the disaster strikes? How do you get your business up and running again? Here are a few things that may help.

  1. Communicate with your employees. Sometimes this may be difficult, but make sure you have a few different ways you can communicate with your team. Whether that’s by phone, email text or messaging apps. Make sure you have emergency contacts for your employees as well because you may have to contact them if you can’t get ahold of your employees.

  1. Communicate with your customers if necessary. If you provide a crucial service to your customers, try to communicate the situation with them. That could be putting a notice on social media or other forms of communication.

  1. Call insurance. Make sure you take photos and videos make sure you contact insurance to file any necessary claims.

  1. Check you data and backups. Make sure your backups are still operational and take note of the days your business may not have been operable. This can help you to assess how you need to proceed with your data.

  1. Use your social media if you’re able to. This is a great way for your business to communicate if internet is still up and people have access. You can share with your community and employees what’s going on and offer ways to help out other fellow businesses if you have the means to.

  1. Know who you should call for assistance. If your business needs relief, whether it’s for IT support, business loans you may need or other insurance claims, make sure you have a list of those organizations that can provide you the support that you need.
